Paper Wasps (Polistes spp.) – Native & Introduced

  • Identification: Slender-bodied with long legs; umbrella-shaped exposed nests with honeycomb cells visible from below.
  • Size: 10–25 mm.
  • Colour: Tan-reddish with faint yellow stripes; yellow face.
  • Habitat: Open nests under eaves, in shrubs, on fence posts, and garden structures.
  • Behaviour: Generally not aggressive but will defend nests if disturbed.

Paper comb nests beneath eaves or on vegetation; larvae visible in cells; adults resting on nest surfaces at night.

Mud Dauber Wasps (Sceliphron spp., Pison spp.) – Native

  • Identification: Build nests entirely of mud (tubes or organ-pipe clusters).
  • Size: ~25 mm (≈1 in).
  • Colour: Black or metallic with yellow/red markings.
  • Habitat: Nests on sheltered vertical or overhead surfaces (sheds, garages, eaves).
  • Behaviour: Solitary and non-aggressive.

Mud nests affixed to walls, ceilings, beams, or corners; often clustered in protected areas.

Potter Wasps (Abispa, Delta spp.) – Native

  • Identification: Create small vase- or pot-shaped mud cells in sheltered cavities.
  • Size: ~20–30 mm (varies by species).
  • Colour: Black or brown with striking yellow, orange, white, or red markings.
  • Habitat: Free-standing mud nests on structures and within cavities.
  • Behaviour: Solitary; rarely aggressive (non-colonial).
